Unesco Tour – Sassi di Matera & Alberobello
Guided tour of the Sassi of Matera and Trulli village of Alberobello
Matera, 2019 European Capital of Culture and Unesco Heritage Site, is one of the oldest city in the world. Its territory preserves old settlements dating back to the Paleolithic Age.
Matera is, the so-called, city of the “Sassi” (Stones); the original town developed from natural caves dug into the rock, then shaped into even more complex structures such as the two big natural amphitheaters, Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano.
Visit a cave-house entirely and typically furnished to understand the customs and traditions of the inhabitants of the ancient Sassi districts, before their abandonment.
Also, visit to a Cave Church, dating back to the 8th Century, the most important in the history of Matera.
At the end of the walk, visit to a bakery and tasting of Matera bread, which has become an IGP product thanks to its historical and organoleptic qualities.
Alberobello, in the heart of the “Murgia dei Trulli”, is a World Heritage Site with its 1500 trulloes.
Visit to the Monti district, the oldest part the town, together with the Aia Piccola district, where Casa Pezzolla stands out, a complex of 15 communicating trulloes, which is today the location of the “local Museum”, and the Trullo Sovrano, which hosts shows and concerts.
Visit to the amazing Church of Sant’Antonio, the only trullo-shaped church in the world.
Guaranteed departure every Wednesday by reservation. This tour provides an English/Italian language guide, IGP Matera bread tasting, house-cave ticket, rocky Church ticket and insurance. Transfer on request. Possibility to choose other days or enjoying a private experience.
