Castel del Monte is a fortress with an unusual octagonal shape commissioned by Frederick II of Swabia, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and King of Sicily. The medieval stronghold stands on a hill in the Alta Murgia Nation Park and was defined by its creator, "stupor mundi". The nature of this fascinating castle is still not known today. It also became a UNESCO site, it is thought to have been used as an astronomical observatory or perhaps an imposing hunting lodge, it certainly differs significantly from all the other castles in Puglia above all for the strong presence of symbolic suggestions and for being surrounded by an incessant blanket of mystery.
